“YOU’VE WON A MILLION POUNDS!” — JEREMY CLARKSON’S REACTION TO WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE’S NEWEST JACKPOT WINNER IS PURE GOLD

It doesn’t happen often — but when it does, it’s television gold. A recent episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? delivered one of the most electric moments the show has seen in years, as retired IT analyst Roman Dubowski defied the odds to walk away with the full £1,000,000 jackpot, leaving host Jeremy Clarkson visibly stunned.

The episode didn’t start promisingly. The very first contestant of the night was eliminated early after fumbling a question about actress Emma Stone, prompting Clarkson to set expectations low with his trademark dry humor: “We ask questions, one of them’s about Emma Stone and some silly Gucci film, you get it wrong and then we move on to the next contestant. That seems to be the form today.”

Enter Roman Dubowski. What followed was a masterclass in composure under pressure, as Dubowski steadily worked his way through the questions with help from the studio audience and his sister, Danuta, acting as his lifeline. By the time he crossed the £250,000 mark, even Clarkson couldn’t hide his admiration, quipping: “It looks like we’ve got a proper encyclopaedia in a shirt here!”
The tension ramped up as Dubowski reached the million-pound question with two lifelines still in hand. “Strangely, I’ve become less nervous as it’s gone on,” he admitted, moments before Clarkson read out the final question: which trademarked logo — used since 1876 and referenced in James Joyce’s Ulysses and depicted in works by Manet and Picasso — was being described? The options: Bass Ale, The Famous Grouse, Coca-Cola, or Stella Artois.

Dubowski wasn’t entirely sure of his answer, admitting, “I’ve got something in my head, but I’m not sure it’s right.” Clarkson, clearly invested in the outcome, responded with a line that captured the mood of the entire studio: “I’ve got something in my head and it’s called hope!”
After using his 50/50 lifeline to narrow things down, Dubowski committed to his answer. The room fell silent as the correct response was revealed — and then erupted into cheers as Clarkson delivered the words every contestant dreams of hearing: “You’ve won a million pounds!” Visibly moved by the moment, Clarkson added: “It’s an extraordinary thing! That’s fantastic!”
For Clarkson, who has hosted the ITV revival since 2018, moments like these are exactly why he keeps coming back to the format year after year. And for viewers, watching genuine, unscripted joy unfold on live television — the kind no amount of farming chaos or car-based mayhem can replicate — is a reminder of why Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? remains a national institution more than two decades after it first aired.
