Solihull Millionaire Hot Seat player told they ‘should’ve watched The Grand Tour’

Host of ITV gameshow Jeremy Clarkson told one contestant ‘look what’s happened’

One player from Solihull was told they should have watched The Grand Tour

ITV quiz show Millionaire Hot Seat host Jeremy Clarkson told one player that they should have watched his Prime Video series The Grand Tour after a costly mistake.

The presenter also apologised to another contestant after they had to leave the programme following just a single question. The gameshow broadcast its sixth episode of the second series on Monday evening (September 7), with six hopefuls putting their general knowledge to the test in pursuit of a life-changing sum.

For the uninitiated, the programme is a spin-off of the much-loved Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, but contestants face the added pressure of a countdown clock ticking away. Clarkson himself described it as similar to the original format but running ‘at double speed’.

Consequently, there is no time for hesitation as six players compete for the top prize. Standing between the contestants and the ultimate jackpot are 15 questions, with no lifelines on offer to help them along the way.

Each correct answer propels them further up the prize ladder, beginning at £100 and rising in increments all the way to the coveted one million pound figure. Every player is permitted a single pass, though using it means vacating the hot seat with no guarantee of returning to it, reports the Express.

Another player only lasted one question

Should a contestant answer incorrectly, they not only exit the show but also remove the highest rung from the prize ladder. This means the maximum prize available to remaining players diminishes accordingly — dropping first to £250,000, then £100,000, followed by £50,000 and continuing downwards.

During the most recent episode, the latest contestants faced early difficulties as they each used their pass one after another. One participant deployed theirs on the £500 question after failing to recognise which phrase was not a palindrome.

Following their use of a pass, the next contestant was unable to do likewise and was required to answer their opening question correctly. This proved to be the downfall of retired GP Sanjay Sharma from Welwyn, who encountered a question he conceded would be a ‘complete guess’.

For £1,000, he was asked: “The Taylor Swift song The Fate of Ophelia is based on a character from which Shakespeare play?” Sanjay promptly told himself: “It’s going to be a complete guess here. I don’t think it’s Hamlet or Macbeth.”

Clarkson informed him he was ‘totally wrong’ and added: “I’m so sorry Sanjay, the correct answer was Hamlet. That’s a rotten bit of luck as we’ve only just met and now you have to go.”

This meant Sanjay became the first contestant eliminated after tackling just a single question. Subsequently, when it came to one of the later questions, Romanda from Solihull demonstrated that they were perhaps not the most devoted followers of all of Clarkson’s ventures.

The question for £20,000 asked: “Of these countries that border the Black Sea, which one is located at the eastern end of the sea?”

Her options were A: Bulgaria, B: Georgia, C: Ukraine or D: Romania. Romanda selected Bulgaria but the correct answer was actually Georgia.

The former Top Gear presenter quipped: “Did you never see The Grand Tour, the show I did? We drove from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea – from Georgia to Azerbaijan but you weren’t watching and now look what’s happened.”
