Chancellor Park Cafe – Daniel Catches Phyllis Closing the Real Estate Deal With Cane and Gets Summer Involved to Talk Sense to Her

Cane meets with Phyllis at the cafe and informs her the transfer of ownership of the Athletic Club and the office building she wanted has gone in. Cane brings up the office building’s view of Newman Enterprises, suggesting Phyllis’s scheme depends on it, but she insists it’s a coincidence.

Cane asks exactly why she wanted the properties. He wonders if she’s just trying to throw herself into a new project now that Matt is out of the picture.

Phyllis takes offense. She says she’s over Matt and she’s insulted that Cane would even bring him up. Cane apologizes but Phyllis doesn’t take his apology seriously. She asks if people ask him if his romantic relationship with Lily coincides with their business together and he says that actually, they do, and in fact Phyllis has, quite often!

Cane admits that his business and personal lives interfere with each other no matter how hard he tries to keep them separate, and that’s been a hard lesson to learn.

Phyllis asks if he learned that lesson from his time pretending to be Aristotle Dumas, and he says she’s got it right. He laments that his scheming cost him his family, though he’s grateful he managed to turn it around. Phyllis says she’s happy for him. She doesn’t know if she’ll ever be able to rebuild her relationship with Summer, though she’s a little more optimistic about Daniel.

Cane advises Phyllis to take his Aristotle Dumas days as a cautionary tale and prioritize her relationships over her schemes. Phyllis asks if he’s rooting for her, and he says that he is, and that he’d be happy to do more business with her in the future, especially since she was willing to pay so much for his old properties.

Cane asks where Phyllis got the money for his properties, and she admits she took out loans and had to beg for the rest. Cane warns her that’s dangerous, but she says she believes in herself, and that’s the best bet there is.

Phyllis looks at Cane with a neutral expression.

Cane tells Phyllis that the Athletic Club basically runs itself with all the great staff and the manager he’s hired, so all she has to do is count her money. She doesn’t plan to run things that way, though, and reminds him that she has experience running a hotel. He remembers that she ran the Grand Phoenix.

Phyllis can’t resist taunting Cane by telling him that his owner’s discount is invalid now that she owns the place.

Daniel walks by and asks if he’s interrupting. Cane says he’s just leaving and that he and Phyllis had been discussing the importance of family. He walks away and Daniel takes his seat.

Daniel Romalotti looks at his mother guardedly.

Daniel wastes no time voicing concerns, saying Phyllis and Cane looked “awfully chummy.” Phyllis admits she’s purchased some properties from Cane.

Daniel doesn’t understand how Phyllis got the money for it and asks if Cane cut her a sweetheart deal. Phyllis laughs and explains that she actually paid well above market value. She admits that she got several loans from different banks.

Daniel wants to know why. Phyllis says she wants to own the building she lives in. Daniel thinks it’s just an unnecessary expense. Phyllis says Daniel has a very corporate mentality and eventually works her way around to inviting him to come work with her.

Phyllis smiles smugly.

Daniel accuses her of changing the subject to evade his questions. Phyllis says her offer beats being a “mixologist” at his dad’s club. Daniel says he likes tending bar, and he still wants to know why she bought the Athletic Club. He wonders if she plans to evict guests she doesn’t like and toss people out of the dining room.

Phyllis says owning the Athletic Club gives her an identity in Genoa City; after all, it’s central to the business world.

Daniel asks about the office building across from Newman Enterprises. She says she’s marking her territory and wants to remind Victor, every single day, that she’s in the game.

Daniel talks on the phone.

Daniel pulls out his phone to call Summer. He says he needs help talking some sense into Phyllis and hands Phyllis the phone.

Phyllis asks Summer if she’s still dating the same guy, but Summer just wants to know what Daniel was worried about. Phyllis admits that Daniel caught her talking to Cane about a business deal and says everything is legal and Daniel is overreacting. Phyllis just wants to talk about Summer; she misses her.

Phyllis begins to cry and says she takes full responsibility for the rift between herself and her children. She says she wants to see Summer and be a family again. Summer cuts the call short, and Phyllis says it was good to hear her voice and hands the phone back to Daniel. She’s glad at least that Summer didn’t hang up on her.

Phyllis holds her head.

Daniel says neither he nor Summer wants to hurt her, they just want to be able to feel like they can trust her.
