Society – Phyllis Learns About Matt’s Car Crash From Nick, Nick Learns Joe the Dealer Has Been Found Alive From Adam

Nick is sitting alone in the lounge texting on his phone when Phyllis approaches. She asks if he’s avoiding her. He says he’s not.

Phyllis suspects he is because he’s not having lunch at the Athletic Club like he usually does. She thinks that he’s avoiding the club now because she owns it. Nick explains that he’s not having lunch, just coffee.
Phyllis says Nick looks good and he thanks her. She promises not to talk about his sobriety every time she sees him but says she wants him to know she cares about him and has been worried. Nick hopes she’s not as worried now.
Nick asks if Phyllis has heard from Matt since he left, and she says she hasn’t, insisting the whole subject is ancient history. Nick tells her about Matt’s wrecked car being found outside of town, and that Matt wasn’t found with it.

Nick says the whole thing could be one big setup Matt and Patty orchestrated together. He’s very suspicious because the police can’t find either one of them. He begs Phyllis to think with her head instead of her heart.
Phyllis suggests Matt is hurt and trying to get help. Nick objects that police have checked all the hospitals and clinics in the area and he hasn’t turned up. Phyllis isn’t convinced that means Matt staged the crash. Nick wonders why he wouldn’t just seek help.
Phyllis continues to defend Matt but admits she understands why Nick is suspicious. She says if Matt was okay and able to, he would definitely have tried to reach her. Nick points out that Matt left Phyllis behind “to go on a road trip with another psychopath.” Nick admits that her version of the story is possible but asks her to recognize that it’s far likelier that Matt never changed at all.

Phyllis complains that Matt tried and tried and it was never enough. Nick agrees; it wasn’t. He’ll never be convinced.
Adam arrives and asks if everything is okay. Nick says everything’s fine, but Phyllis disagrees. Adam asks to speak to Nick alone and Phyllis says she doesn’t mind that at all. Nick says that she actually does but turns to leave with Adam.
Outside, Adam asks Nick what that was all about and he says it was nothing. Nick asks Adam about his news, and Adam says Joe the drug dealer was found alive by the police. Nick is relieved that everyone can stop assuming he killed him.

Adam says it’s not good news at all because after the police picked Joe up, he started talking and apparently had a lot to say about Nick beating him up. Nick says he never denied fighting with Joe and adds that if he ever sees his face it’s going to happen again.
Adam says Joe filed a police report and Detective Burrow wants Nick to come in for questioning. Nick guesses that Joe also claims he was never selling drugs. Adam confirms it.
Nick says Joe must be mad that Nick stole his drugs and flushed them down the toilet. Adam is suspicious that maybe Nick used them instead.

Nick insists he didn’t and Adam lets it go. He admits that if he were in Nick’s position he would have done the same thing. Nick isn’t so sure. He notes their roles seem to have reversed; Adam is now the calm, collected one and he’s the loose cannon.
Nick praises Adam for stepping up for the family. Adam says he’ll always be in Nick’s corner, and asks if he’s heard anything new about Matt. Nick says Phyllis hasn’t heard from him.
Adam notes Phyllis seemed angry, and Nick agrees that she is and that they argued. Nick wants to go check on Sharon and asks Adam to let Detective Burrow know he intends to fully cooperate with the investigation.
