Two-For-One Special: Did Young & Restless Just Kill Off Patty *and* Matt?

A word to the wise: Never try to reason with a lunatic while you’re in a speeding car with them. Young & Restless’ Matt attempted to do just that in Monday’s episode (recapped in full here), and the results were… yikes!

Wrong Time, Wrong Place, Wrong Psycho

Taking his life in his hands, Matt encouraged Patty to turn herself in and went so far as to ask what the sweet 5-year-old version of her would think of the madwoman that she’s become. He even promised to be a friend to Patty and pull strings to ensure that she wound up someplace where she could really get the help that she needs.

Unfortunately for Matt, Patty expressed a certain, shall we say, reluctance to the notion of being locked up again, no matter how nice the facility. Rather than risk being relocated to a padded cell, she grabbed the steering wheel and pointed the car right off the road. (Shades of what Matt did to Nick, no?)

Who Lives? Who Dies?

Given that Patty is the ultimate cat lover, we’re going to go out on a limb and assume that, like her feline friends, she has nine lives. Maybe the incoming headwriters will even decide to truly rehabilitate Patty and allow her to be more than a cartoon villain that’s trotted out every time the show needs a storyline jolt.

As for Matt, our hunch is that he’ll survive, too — though, again, with new headwriters taking over, his long-term future in Genoa City is iffy at best. Roger Howarth has once again done the impossible and made us like a reprehensible character. (He did the same thing with One Life to Live’s Todd and General Hospital’s Franco.) But the scribes may not want to start their tenure by turning a serial rapist and would-be killer into a romantic lead. It might be smarter (and a lot less icky) to just reintroduce Howarth as someone whose crimes aren’t so indelibly etched in the minds of the audience.
