‘I ate at Jeremy Clarkson’s pub and my jaw was on the floor when I saw the bill’

Jeremy Clarkson’s pub The Farmer’s Dog in West Oxfordshire left one customer gobsmacked after receiving the bill for his party of four – but many Brits defended the cost

One customer shared the price of their meal after eating at Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmer’s Dog
A customer who stopped by Jeremy Clarkson‘s pub, The Farmer’s Dog, over the weekend couldn’t conceal his shock when presented with the bill for his group of four – so much so he joked he was “keeping his glass”. Rick Gannon attended the West Oxfordshire venue on Sunday (September 20) where he tried a pint of the presenter’s renowned Hawkstone Lager served in a The Farmer’s Pint glass.
For those wanting to eat at the establishment, reservations are made available on the first of each month for the subsequent month. “They go fast – so if you want one, that’s the date to have in your diary,” the pub’s website states. “You can always turn up without a booking, grab a drink, and eat at The Farmer’s Puppy and The Farmer’s Dough in The Grand Tour Tent.”
The former Top Gear presenter turned farmer, Clarkson takes pride in attempting his “absolute hardest” to ensure that virtually everything his patrons consume in The Farmer’s Dog is produced or raised by British farmers.
“The pork, the beef, the lamb and the venison are all British,” he adds online. “And so is pretty much everything else. The milk, the butter, the eggs, the vegetables and the fruit. We even cook in British oils.”
Nevertheless, he acknowledges: “There have been some problems like, for instance, the simple GandT. You can’t have a pub that doesn’t offer a gin and tonic. But there is quinine in tonic water, and you can’t grow that in Britain.
“Sure, I could have served gin and water instead, but I didn’t think you’d enjoy it very much. Especially as, instead of a slice of lemon, you’d have been given a slice of turnip, or some potato peelings.”
Meanwhile, following his visit, customer Rick posted a photograph of his detailed receipt, which included four roast dinners at £26 each and a 12.5% service charge of £35.26, totalling £317.36.
“I’m keeping the glass!” Rick announced in a post on X. “Went to Jeremy Clarkson’s pub The Farmers Dog for Sunday lunch. There were 4 of us, this is how much it cost.” His beer also cost him £14.
Many Britons defended the price, however, pointing out the length of Rick’s receipt. “You spent just under £80 quid on your drinks… so £50 a head for a three course meal bar one guest who didn’t have a dessert is reasonable in my opinion,” one person remarked. “Stop moaning.”
Another agreed: “Looks fairly reasonable for what you ordered. Over £40 of drinks and £36 on desserts. Plus, a number of sides. You must have seen the prices on the menu.”
A third concurred: “Broken down it’s not actually mad. Four £26 roasts, two sharing boards, extra sides, three desserts, a load of drinks and of course you’ll keep the glass, you paid £14 for it. That’s a proper Sunday session at a British farm pub, more than reasonable.”
And a fourth individual on X declared: “What’s your problem? That works out at £79 each for a decent meal and alcohol. If you’ve got a complete talk to the British government charging nearly £50 in tax. If you wanted something cheap you should have gone to Toby Carvery.”

Rick subsequently returned to X to explain, “What you can do at the Farmer’s Dog if you haven’t booked a table” at The Farmer’s Dog.
“There’s the big Grand Tour tent and inside here you can buy all of the paraphernalia and bits and bobs you may want as souvenirs,” he outlined in footage.
Going inside, Rick showcased the meat counters, with butchers from three local farms providing their own produce. “There’s also the Farmer’s Puppy,” he went on. “Which is an outdoor bar. There’s also a pizza van and a burger van too.”
