Major Game of Thrones Star Scores Scary New Horror TV Show Like Paranormal Activity
A prominent Game of Thrones actor has landed a lead role in a new supernatural horror TV show. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will star in The Black Tapes, an upcoming show from MGM+.
MGM+ has greenlit the series, with Coster-Waldau set to play the lead role of Dr. Richard Strand. The series draws inspiration from the hit horror podcast of the same name, created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae. The podcast debuted in 2015 and has amassed more than 60 million downloads. Miles and Bae will also write and executive produce the television adaptation.
NBC previously developed an adaptation of the project in 2018, but it never received a series order.
Coster-Waldau is best known for playing Jaime Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, a role that earned him two Emmy nominations. The 56-year-old recently appeared in BBC historical drama King and Conqueror. His other notable credits include The Last Thing He Told Me and An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet. The Danish actor will next star opposite Jennifer Lopez in the upcoming Netflix film The Last Mrs. Parrish.
Inside MGM+’s The Black Tapes and its horror investigation premise
The eight-episode series follows Dr. Strand, a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past, as he teams up with Alex Regan, an obsessed and relentless scientist. The pair set out to debunk cases of hauntings, possessions, and sinister urban legends known as the black tapes.
As they dig deeper, their investigations gradually expose a hidden occult world and a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy. The series combines supernatural horror with a mystery that unfolds as the investigations uncover new evidence.
In addition to Miles and Bae, John Rogers and Jennifer Court of Kung Fu Monkey Productions will executive produce alongside Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures. MGM+ produces the TV adaptation.
The production is slated to kick off in Vancouver in January 2027. MGM+ plans to release the show in various regions, including the United States and Latin America.
The Black Tapes does not have a premiere date yet.
