James May is selling his Triumph Stag from the final episode of The Grand Tour

The Triumph Stag driven by James May on The Grand Tour is going under the hammer, giving fans a chance to own a piece of motoring television history.

It’s been two years since Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May brought their 22-year on-screen partnership to an end, but one of the cars that featured in their final adventure is now looking for a new home.

James May has listed his 1974 Triumph Stag MkII for sale through online auction platform Collecting Cars, having owned the British convertible for almost three years.

The magenta-coloured Stag starred in the final episode of The Grand Tour, titled ‘One for the Road’, which saw the former Top Gear presenters travel through Zimbabwe and Botswana in three classic cars they’d always wanted to own. May selected the Triumph Stag, while Clarkson drove a Lancia Montecarlo and Hammond opted for a Ford Capri.

The Stag was produced between 1970 and 1977, with fewer than 26,000 examples manufactured. May’s example has travelled approximately 134,000km and reportedly underwent two restorations before entering his ownership, including mechanical work on its engine, transmission and suspension.

While the car is described as being in generally good condition, prospective buyers should expect some imperfections, including minor panel alignment issues, worn interior trim and pitted chrome. The auction is scheduled to conclude on October 29, with the vehicle offered without reserve, meaning it will sell to the highest bidder.

May isn’t the only former Grand Tour presenter parting ways with a piece of television history. Clarkson is also selling three vehicles from his collection, including the Lancia Montecarlo driven in the show’s finale, alongside an Alfa Romeo GTV6 and Lincoln Continental Mark V both also driven in the show.

For fans wanting to own one of the last cars driven by the famous trio during their time together, the Stag is available to bid on through Collecting Cars.
